The scene is a picturesque country town in South Australia. The action starts with a death that might be murder. The time is that of horses and carriages and gas lamps, when the telephone was still a novelty, forensic science was in its infancy and long before DNA testing. The heroine is a young woman who doesn’t quite fit the mould of 1909. Delilah Brown is the stylish daughter of a police detective who is gifted with plenty of grey cells of her own. When her father comes to a stalemate in a possible murder case, Delilah convinces him to let her take over and travels to Riverton in the guise of a butterfly enthusiast. There she charms her way into the confidences of the local populace (not to mention the heart of one of the main murder suspects). Her investigations reveal a number of challenging personalities and a few vital clues, but there are more murders and danger for the plucky heroine before the case is solved. This is a detective novel written in the style of the Golden Age, with several red herrings, larger than life characters, a dose of social commentary and a tongue quite decidedly in cheek.
